About CityPowerless
CityPowerless – No light in my firefly. Our logo and slogan comes from Johannesburg’s CityPower, who sports a firefly with a bright yellow back, intimating that they keep the lights running in and around Johannesburg. We decided that they are not.
The initial iteration of CityPowerless was in 2015 or thereabouts, which aimed to be a platform for people to log faults with Eskom or CityPower when their power went out. At that point, power outages were rampant, without an official load shedding schedule, and we were often left in the dark.
Over the time, both these companies got their own online fault logging, and load shedding schedules. Then, CityPowerless became a source of parody jokes and platform to bash Eskom and CityPower.
Then, realizing that it is no longer a joking matter, and something needs to happen to try and change the current situation, CityPowerless has evolved to become a solutions platform. This evolution came about after a rant by founder Kobus Myburgh on Facebook.
We are becoming something more. We are becoming a solutions think tank. Our aim is to provide resources to people to guide them to initially become less disrupted by load shedding and other incompetence of our electricity providers. Perhaps we can help people get off the grid eventually. Watch this space. We also want to provide insightful articles on how to navigate the darkness and useful tips and tricks to do when the power is out.
We count on your involvement. This is voluntary and nobody is getting paid. Having a handy resource about does not come without significant effort on those who contribute to it.
CityPowerless – No light in my firefly. Let’s change that. We all deserve a little light in our lives.
Let’s make it happen!
